Learn how to care for your quick-dry travel towel to prevent odors and keep it performing well trip after trip.
Quick answer
Wash your quick-dry travel towel every 3-5 uses with a mild detergent and no fabric softener, then air dry or tumble on low to keep it fresh and fast-drying.
Why quick-dry towels get smelly
Quick-dry fabrics are hydrophobic, so they don't absorb much water. That's great for drying fast, but it also means body oils, sunscreen, and sweat stay on the surface instead of being rinsed away. Over time, bacteria build up and cause that musty smell.
What not to do
Avoid fabric softener and dryer sheets—they coat the fibers and ruin the towel's ability to dry quickly. Also skip bleach; it breaks down the synthetic fabric. Stick to mild, liquid detergent without additives.
Troubleshooting your towel's freshness
- Symptom: Towel smells musty or sour after a few uses.
- Likely cause: Oils and bacteria trapped in the synthetic fibers, plus infrequent washing.
- Corrective action: Machine-wash in warm water with a small amount of mild liquid detergent. No fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry on low heat or air dry. For stubborn odors, add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle. If the smell persists after two washes, the towel may need a deeper soak in a vinegar solution or replacement if the fibers are worn.
- Stop or switch: If the towel still smells after a deep clean, the fabric may be past its useful life. Consider replacing it with a new quick-dry travel towel.
